A notably early example and 61,500 miles from new

Sold for £7,762

Lot details

Registration No: A222THX
Chassis No: WVWZZZ15ZEK008415

MOT: April 2021

Motor Car Location: West Yorkshire

  • Four previous keepers and 61,500 miles from new
  • Original order form, service book and first MOT certificate on file
  • Supplied new by Dovercourt VW to Miss Madeleine Delves of John St. Clair Films Ltd, London W1 who kept it for over twenty years
  • Updated dashboard, steering wheel and pedals but the originally steering wheel comes with the car
  • MOT'd until 23rd April 2021

H&H are indebted to the vendor for the following description:

'The car comes with a fully stamped service book, various service / maintenance invoices up until 2018, the original order form and even the relevant salesman’s business card. It also has factory alloy wheels. This is a genuine low mileage, low owner MK 1 GTI in very good overall condition for its age. Never restored, the last keeper fitted some bolt-on accessories (reversing camera, upgraded stereo etc) which would not appeal to a purist. However, they can be removed and original steering wheel which comes with the car reinstated etc.

The bodywork appears free of rust and has received underbody protection. I believe that the car only needs minor cosmetic work to make it one of the very best original VW MK1 Golf GTI’s out there. It shows slight wear on the driver’s seat bolster which was common for this model. The hood is in excellent condition and works perfectly. The GTi also drives very nicely. New front brakes were fitted in 2019 and the Cabriolet comes with a fresh MOT certificate valid until April 2021. Comprehensive MOT verification from 1986 through to 2020 certifying the mileage (these will be supplied with the vehicle history file)'.

Vendor Condition Ratings:

Bodywork: 'Very Good'
Engine: 'Very Good'
Electrical Equipment: 'Very Good'
Paintwork: 'Very Good'
Transmission: 'Very Good'
Interior Trim: 'Very Good'

Changes of Keeper:

1st Owner – 21/12/1983
2nd Owner – 20-01-2004
3rd Owner – 18/06/2005
4th Owner – 02/05/2007
5th Owner – 09/05/2015

Model Info:

Successor to the Volkswagen Beetle soft-top, the Golf MK1 Cabriolet was introduced at the 1979 Geneva Salon and remained in production until July 1993. Engineered and built by Karmann of Osnabruck, the newcomer was every bit as stylish as its Giorgetto Guigiaro-penned hatchback sibling. Suitably reinforced thanks to a substantial rollover hoop, trans-dashboard 'knee bar' and strengthened sills etc, it also featured a snug-fitting and well-insulated hood. Initially available in GL / GLS and GLi guises, the ultimate GTi variant arrived during 1983. Powered by a fuel-injected 1781cc SOHC four-cylinder engine allied to five-speed manual transmission, it was reputedly capable of 0-60mph in 9.4 seconds and 110mph. 1980s icons to rival the Audi ur Quattro, the VW Golf MK1 GTi hatchback and cabriolet have long achieved cult status.
