The DL200 was the last of the great Lambretta scooters that rolled off of Innocenti’s production line in Milan. Produced from January 1969 until April 1971 it is said a total of only 9350 DL/GP200’s were made. The GP200 followed the SX200 and retained the engine prefix of SX200 before the serial number. The iconic bodywork followed the trends of the day of the early 1970’s. The Bertone design was more streamlined than its predecessors with a new 22/2 frame and rectangular headlight. There were however significant improvements to the engine over the SX including: improved crankshaft, a complete overhaul of the gearbox ratios and improved Ducati ignition. The electronic version went even further with a 6v electronic Ducati ignition and CDI unit and these today are extremely collectible. It is said that less than 1000 electronic versions were produced.
This 1971 manufactured DL200 Electronic was imported from Italy by Lambretta Museum owner Nigel Cox in 1997 and first registered in the UK that year and he has verified this as a genuine electronic. It was sold in 1997 to a Paul Wood who kept it for 24 years before selling it to our vendor. It was restored only recently in 2021 on behalf of our vendor and he invested in many NOS parts to get to a very high standard in our opinion. The restoration was carried out by Martin Watts who is well known in the south of England for his quality work. The mileage on the new MPH speedometer shows only 1 miles. The vendor has never used it since restoration . The paint is in the correct Ochre colour, vibrant and deep and appearing as new.
This example has been treated to a restoration to a level of that can be described in our opinion as excellent. To our mind we can see the correct original parts in place or high standard remade parts only. The level of detail down to the smallest parts can be clearly seen by careful examination of the photographs. Starting with the electrics she has 6 volt red original CDI 323901 with black wire and the original Ducati 6v electronic stator plate with correct fixings. Being a DL there is no battery. The ignition switch appears to be the original with number 153. The panels fit well. The seat is an original Guiliari seat with a very rare basket weave style cover. The floor edging ‘Sharks teeth’ look original. The leg shield badge is the original DL badge. The brake adjusters are the original late short versions found on late GPs. The plastic parts are also the original Black, including the correct part numbered petrol flap, horncast front and rear frame grille. The rear light gasket is the correct thin type only used on ‘electronics’. Also the correct black toolbox. The levers are the the later correct ball end type. The keys are all present for ignition, toolbox, leg shield tool box and steering lock. The carburettor is possibly the original SH2/22. The exhaust is a standard Innocenti. The chrome everywhere is very good. There is a spare wheel and holder inside the legshield. Our consultant was able and had time to check the frame welds behind the CDI unit to physically demonstrate that this is a genuine ‘electronic’ and these can be seen in the photos. The lot is supplied with every MOT and tax disc from 1997 to 2015.
We have seen the scooter running and all is functioning extremely well. This is a very rare opportunity for the most serious collector of Lambrettas. With this specification and in our opinion high quality condition of a model that is in demand.
