The Anglia replaced the Model Y in 1939, being basically similar apart from new bonnet and rad grille treatment, although the people's Ford was only briefly made before production was interrupted by WW2 after only 600 units had been built at the Thames-side Dagenham works. Anglia production resumed again surprisingly quickly in May 1945, the postwar model, which was virtually identical to that produced before hostilities, becoming one of the most significant of all the postwar British-made Fords. The full-width, Consul-style body and McPherson strut suspension were not employed on the Anglia (and the Prefect) until 1954. The sidevalve engine survived in production until 1959 when the 105E Anglia with all-new bodyshell and 997cc 4-cylinder overhead valve engine replaced it.
The 1953-manufactured Ford Anglia being auctioned here has a believed to be genuine 32,644 miles from new on the clock. According to the vendor, although the paintwork is only rated as being fair, the sit-up-and-beg Ford has a sound body and chassis and good interior. 933cc 4-cylinder side-valve engine, 3-speed transmission and electrical equipment are all reportedly good too. Although exhibited in a Motor Museum for the past three years, we understand that, following basic recommissioning being carried out, it should be possible to put this car back on the road fairly quickly to provide a new owner with many more miles of pop classic motoring.
