1970 Brabham BT28/29 Single Seater

Estimated at £28,000 - £32,000

Lot details
Registration No: N/A
Chassis No: BT28/42
Mot Expiry: N/A

The first production racing Brabham was actually constructed by Motor Racing Developments, a 1961 offshoot of Jack Brabham (Motors) Limited set up by Jack Brabham and Ron Tauranac. However, from 1962 onwards all Brabham single-seater and sportscar racers were produced by Brabham Racing Developments, who not only made cars for sale to other teams and privateers, but also built the works team F1s for the Brabham Racing Organisation.
Chassis number BT28/42 with Arch Motors frame number AM70/124 was the last BT28 assembled. Supplied new to Barry Goulden, the single-seater made its competitive debut at Thruxton in an F3 race held on 23rd August 1970. Vic Preston purchased the car at the end of the season and exported it to Kenya for his son to drive. Converted to Formula Atlantic trim, the Brabham initially ran without wings and a twin-cam engine but from 1971 onwards adopted its current BDA engine and wings configuration. Raced extensively in East Africa, 'BT28/42' was a regular winner and lap record holder. Preston Junior sold it to Nazir Hussein (India's FIA representative at the time) in 1977 but the car returned to Kenya some three years later with Dalgit Singh Chaggar.
Acquired by the current owner in Nairobi during 1986, the Brabham was subsequently brought back to England and its restoration entrusted to Peter Denty. A consistent front runner since then in the HSCC Championship (where it competed without wings), 'BT28/42' has latterly tested its mettle, with wings and slicks, in the Derek Bell and Jochen Rindt Trophy races and the Euro F2 series.
Reportedly benefiting from a recently refreshed Racing Fabrications Cosworth BDA engine and Hewland FT200 gearbox (the latter overhauled by Mark Bailey Racing), the Brabham is described by the vendor as being in "excellent and race ready condition". Offered for sale with HSCC and FIA papers, the single-seater is also accompanied by a spare set of wheels shod with a new set of 'wets', some general spares and a huge history file.
