1929 Morgan Aero

Estimated at £35,000 - £45,000

Lot details
Registration No: TE 6857
Chassis No: 1159A
Mot Expiry: None

An ingenious concept, HFS Morgan's first Three-Wheeler was unveiled in 1909. Based around a tubular steel chassis frame, the design's low centre of gravity and advanced 'sliding pillar' independent front suspension endowed it with superlative roadholding. Progressively developed, the single rear-wheel-driven platform ultimately played host to a variety of JAP, Matchless, Blackburne, Anzani and Ford powerplants. Fearsome competition cars, Morgan Three-Wheelers driven by the likes of HFS himself, Clive Lones and Harold Beart acquitted themselves well on race circuits and trial stages alike - eg Mrs Gwenda Stewart recorded 115.66mph during a record run at Montlhéry in 1930. First advertised in 1920 (but available a couple of seasons earlier), the Aero soon became a favourite among sporting motorists. With its stark yet sleek bodywork, impressive power to weight ratio and nimble handling, it was capable of embarrassing far more expensive machinery. Initially propelled by a 980cc JAP V-twin side-valve engine allied to two-speed manual transmission, the model continued to evolve until production ceased in 1933.

The sale Morgan is a B Type Aero - chassis number 1159A - that was delivered new to dealer Colmore Depot in Manchester on March 17th 1929 and powered by a 'dog-eared' 1096cc JAP engine. The factory records show it to have been finished in Blue and equipped with a self-starter and aluminium number plates. The vendor purchased the Morgan three years ago from Three-Wheeler aficionado Jeremy Jones, who had retained it since 1962 and, over time, used it for everything from commuting to college, holidays, racing etc. He regarded 'TE 6857' as an unusually original example and sung its praises in an article in the May 1984 edition of The Automobile. Presented in its original colour and trimmed in Black leather, this delightful Three-Wheeler is considered by the vendor to have "excellent" bodywork, paintwork, interior trim, twin-cylinder engine and two-speed transmission, and is selling it complete with buff log book and VSCC papers. Such unmolested Aeros rarely come to market these days.

PLEASE NOTE: This vehicle does not have an MOT.
