Millionaire David Brown's Aston Martin, who made cars at Feltham in Middlesex in the 1940s and 1950s, unveiled their new DB2 in 1950. The 2-seater, fixed head coupe with bodywork in aluminium styled by Frank Feeley was considered very futuristic and was powered by the Lagonda 2.6-litre, 6-cylinder, twin cam. The 1951 MkII version of the DB2 had a number of development improvements, the model being raced and rallied with great success. 411 DB2s were produced between 1950 and October 1953 when the DB2 was replaced by the DB2/4, an occasional 4-seater with hatchback rear-door.
The 1952-dated Aston Martin DB2 on offer is presented in grey with red interior. The vendor tells us that the Jaguar 3.4 engine with triple SU carbs was most likely fitted in the 1960s, the Jag motor being more powerful, more reliable and better able to withstand enthusiastic treatment than the rather fragile original power unit. More recently, other mods have included alternator instead of dynamo, servo-assisted brakes, and full harnesses and Brantz tripmeter, so that the car could be driven competitively on classic tours, FIVA rallies and racing circuit events.
The entrant tells us that bodywork, paint and interior are fair, the latter original, and engine and transmission are good. A stainless steel exhaust is fitted and, says the owner, sounds well. The 90,387 miles displayed on the odometer is thought to be the total mileage since 1952.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
