Lot 46

1962 Triumph TR4

Estimated at £25,000 - £30,000

Lot details
Registration No: 270 VC
Chassis No: CT6320-0
Mot Expiry: June 2012

This very special, rare right-hand drive, home market TR4 was manufactured in March 1962 and restored to standard from the chassis upwards between 1982 and 2010. Following completion, it was decided to uprate the Triumph to Works-style rally specification for the milder/more gentle road rallies and club events - a task that was largely entrusted to renowned TR experts TR Bitz. The idea was to echo the looks and performance of the legendary (3, 4, 5 and 6 VC) that Triumph campaigned from 1962 to 1964, without spoiling the TR for everyday use. The resulting equipment includes:

Engine: Fully refurbished with: new liners, pistons, Kent camshaft, high-port gas-flowed head, valves, guides and springs; four-branch extractor exhaust manifold; s/s exhaust system; twin period Italian-made Weber 40DCOE carburettors and inlet manifolds with stainless steel heat shield; Facet high-pressure fuel pump and pressure regulator; remote radiator header tank

Chassis: Front anti-roll bar; 5.5 inch Minilite wheels; Dunlop SP82 tyres; Goodridge braided hoses

Body: Alloy hard top; TR4A-type central handbrake; Revington high-back bucket seats with headrests; full harness seat belts; roll bar; Works-type scuttle fresh air scoop; 1.75kg fire extinguisher; new period Halda Speed Pilot and compass; quick release filler cap; under-wing protection treatment; rear mud flaps; front and rear towing eyes

Electrical: Works type wiring with 4x4 Lucas SF4 fuse blocks; 4 Lucas 6RA relays; heavy-duty battery; Lucas 18ACR alternator with s/s heat shield; battery isolator/cut-out switch; high-torque starter motor; Kenlowe fan; Lucas SLR and SFT lamps on Works type bar; Lucas WFT576 reversing lamp; Lucas DR3A two-speed wipers; period map reading light; Lucas Le Mans headlamps with stone guards; co-driver's horn push; air horns; high visibility brake light; rear fog warning light

It apparently took two years to source this car, whose chassis number CT6320-0 is close to that of the Works ones. It is now available complete with the original SU carburettors and manifolds, evocative '270 VC' registration and MOT into June. Such a Triumph would now reputedly cost £50,000 plus to build!
