On offer here is a competition-ready Austin A40, a BMC model that is forever famous thanks to the exploits in period of the great tin top dicer Doc Shepherd who dominated weekend club racing with many outright wins in his A40. This 1962-manufactured, Farina-styled 2-door saloon was acquired by the Leicestershire vendor from previous owner David Evans in early 2002.
With minimalist trim in place, the bodyshell is said to be very sound. Inside, there are competition buckets and headlining only, with roll cage and Perspex side windows. Outside, the front wings have been renewed and works supplied doors and bonnet in aluminium are thought to be unique. The suspension has been lowered and 1960s-style Minilites are shod with new tyres. The 4-cylinder BMC engine of 1098cc capacity has extensively modified cylinder head, inlet manifold and carb.
Although currently prepared for special stage rallying, road rally compliant trim could be easily added and, with very few changes, it would be ideal for the Top Hat saloon racing series. On file are a set of FIA papers as well as a Heritage certificate confirming original Longbridge manufacture.
Please note: The fuel needle value is sticking on this vehicle.
