Ram Racing was formed from Ralf MacDonald Racing and they entered the F5000 Championship in 1975 running Alan Jones in a March. They first attempted their entry into the Grand prix world with a pair of Brabham BT44's and later with a March 781 but unfortunately neither of these were successful. Further attempts were made with Williams FW07's in 1980 but unfortunately the company crashed in 1986 with debts of more than £1,000,000.
1985 though started with greater hopes as they had a much bigger budget and in Gustav Brunner they had a designer with a growing reputation. His 03 had slim lines, the monocoque also serving as bodywork, and it was low and light and had pullrod suspension and the latest 740bhp Hart engine to propel it. Things looked well but the results did not come and indeed they only managed one finish that year and a further setback was received when Winkelhock was killed in a sports car race after he had twice finished Grand Prix's in a RAM.
Towards the end of the season the principal sponsor, Skoal Bandit, pulled out and so RAM missed the last two races and the new hope for Australian sponsorship deal was not finalised and so RAM slipped out of GP racing.
Chassis number 03 was then altered to conform to F3000 racing and received a slightly shorter monocoque, side pods and the DFV engine but it appeared only spasmodically and in fairness was not particularly competitive there either. Designated with a new chassis number - 05/01 - for that series it is now painted in Ferrari colours but is still obviously the very same car because if one examines the monocoque one can still see the green overspray from the Skoal Bandit sponsorship quite clearly.
Entered from a private collection one must be very emphatic that this is not a show car by any means but simply a racecar missing its engine. Everything is there and so if an engine was fitted it is all set up to go and wouldn't that be a very exciting way to return to the modern F1 historic racing scene.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
