If you are regarded as possibly the epitome of cool by generations of adoring fans what other scooter are you going to buy other than an SX200? And that is exactly what happened. Many regard the SX200 to be the finest scooter Innocenti produced, possibly the best scooter ever made, and Paul Weller (born John William Weller) to be the finest singer-songwriter to grace the pop charts and influence probably millions of fans around the world. Paul Weller famed as front man of The Jam, then The Style Council and then several incarnations as a solo artist with widespread critical acclaim. ‘The Modfather’ is an absolute legend and is as A class in the cool category as you can be.

This is, as far was we are aware, the only scooter Paul Weller bought with his own money as a famous musician. Bought in 1991 at the time Paul was working on his second solo album. We understand he tried to buy another one which he missed and the saw this one in The Scooter Shop in Woking as it was being prepared for sale and bought it. It has featured in several private ‘behind the scenes’ photographs and in his biography. It also features on the inside cover of his second solo album ‘Wildwood’ and he can be seen riding three up with drummer Steve White and bassist Marco Nelson. Most famously it can also be seen in the official pop video pop for ‘Friday Street’ where Paul is seen riding it. Paul is quoted as saying in an article in Scootering magazine in May, 2000, that he’d always keep the White SX200. However, he very kindly donated it to the Sun newspaper campaign in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust and it was auctioned at the Royal Albert Hall in February 2002. It was won by Terrance Chapman who displayed it in his shop in The Wirral. It did, however, go to auction once again, very soon after in the Christies pop memorabilia auction a year later on April 30^th, 2003. It then appeared online for sale and was snapped up by a genuine Weller fan and kept in a collection for almost 20 years. Our vendor has only recently been in possession of the scooter and has genuine reasons for selling his collection of scooters.

This late production example has battery tray and on DVLA system as first registered in the UK on 9th July 1968. As aforementioned, it was purchased by Paul Weller in 1991and on the picture taken at the time we can see that the engine side casing and kick start are painted white. This has been a constant throughout and it is still just as it was now. The chrome toolbox door and chrome fuel flap are also as they were when he bought it. The previous keeper of 20 years did have an extensive refresh of the scooter including full mechanical and a large amount of bodywork repaired by Armando’s in 2020. The bill for £8,778 is included in the lot. It is surprising that the Continental tyres look original and it is possible that they are the ones that were on there, when Paul owned it. For sure, all of the keys are original and these are the ones he would have handled himself. On closer examination we can see that the scooter is now on 12v with larger possibly 26mm Dellorto carburettor and big 42mm bore exhaust. A long range tank has been fitted. The cables look to have been fitted well with correct grease points. Our consultant was able to ride the scooter and it performed really well.

• Scootering Magazine from January 1992 with Paul and the scooter on the front cover and exclusive article inside with Paul explaining why he bought the scooter.
• A picture of him outside The Scooter Shop in Woking where he bought it.
• Old Blue V5 with Paul’s real name on the log book and the date he bought it
• The biographical book by Paolo Hewitt ‘Days Lose Their Names and Time Slips By’ with a double page of Paul and his son and friend on the scooter at their home.
• Copy of Scootering magazine from May, 2000, with an interview with Paul explaining that he would never sell his White SX200.
• Copy of press from The Sun newspaper as they praise him for donating the scooter to their Teenage Cancer Trust campaign
