Introduced in 1962, the more popular of the two P4 models (95 and 110), the Rover 95, was based around a sturdy box-section chassis equipped with independent coil and wishbone front suspension, a Panhard rod located 'live' rear axle and hydraulic disc and drum brakes. Boasting a seven-bearing crankshaft, its smooth 2,625cc straight-six engine was rated at 102bhp and 140lb. ft. of torque. Allied to a four-speed manual gearbox and powering the rear wheels viâ a 3.9:1 final drive ratio, it reputedly endowed the dignified-looking saloon with a 93mph top speed. Exchanging its aluminium bonnet, boot and door skins for less dent-prone steel ones during 1964, the Rover 95 was phased out of production in May of that year, although, not before some 3,680 had been sold.
The very epitome of the mid-century, middle-class British Saloon, this end-of-production Rover 95 is beautifully presented in its original colour scheme of Stone Grey over Burgundy, while the interior is original and exceptionally well-preserved with a very attractive light patina. What is possibly most remarkable is the fact that this car has had just four keepers in its 62-year life, and has seemingly never resided outside of the Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire areas. Registered in Rutland and previously owned by a Mr. Spiller of Sutton Bridge, it has been in the present registered ownership since 1980. Moreover, the low mileage reading of 79,600 is shown by paperwork to be genuine.
As may be expected from such a low-ownership car, it has survived with much history intact, including the original service book. The fact that the 1,500-mile service was performed in October, 1964, by Victor Wood of Oakham Ltd. would suggest that Wood was the original dealer. It was subsequently serviced annually up to 1971, using a number of garages in Rutland and, finally, in Boston. The Rover is also supplied with its original owner’s manual, dealership directory, and factory car tag, plus a workshop manual, assorted M.O.T.s from 1982 (71,142 miles) to 2018 (79,244 miles) and, of course, the V5C.
