Throughout the 1960s, BMW invested much to rebuild the motor sporting image for which they had been so very well known before the Bavarian manufacturer's activities were diverted into assisting the WW2 effort. One of the leading modifiers of BMWs were the German tuning firm Alpina who turned the Munch manufacturer's standard road cars into race and rally winners.
Although first announced in 1966, the new 1600 model was not produced in volume until 1967. The 4-cylinder, single overhead camshaft engine fitted to the 1967-manufactured BMW 2-door saloon offered here is believed to have been bored out to 1991cc capacity.
Apart from the motor, ventilated front discs, 5-speed close-ratio gearbox, long range fuel tank, rare 'Sports' seats and, among special instruments, a fuel pressure gauge are fitted. Suspension changes include adjustable anti-roll bar and Bilstein shock absorbers. Whilst among changes from the early 1970s are a front spoiler, Zender wheelarches and wider 14in diameter wheels.
Originally exported by the factory to Brazil and thought to have been one of three cars that were prepared by Alpina for rallying in South America, it was discovered by former F1 privateer Colin Crabbe, who shipped it back to the UK some years ago. Formerly white, though repainted black and, with current MOT and tax disc, this BMW with period Alpina mods is said to be ready to drive away and could be extremely competitive in Historic Rallying.
PLEASE NOTE: This vehicle now has an MOT test and Road Fund Licence as stated above. Also the estimate on this vehicle has changed from that printed in the catalogue to £7,000 - £9,000.
