Along with the Ford Model T, Citroen 2CV and BMC Austin/Morris Mini, the Volkswagen Beetle is generally reckoned to be one of the elite pack of pop motoring icons. Conceived in the small Stuttgart design office of Dr Ferdinand Porsche, the air-cooled, rear-engined 'People's Wagon' was sponsored by the new German Chancellor prewar, one Adolf Hitler, and resurrected by the British in the person of Army Major Ivan Hirst as part of the Allies postwar rebuilding of the enemy's bombed out industry.
Beetle production went on to exceed the Model T total on 17 February 1972, when the previous world record for a single model was exceeded with the 15,007,034th Beetle coming off the Wolfsburg production line. Since then, world record breaking production has exceeded 21 million.
Here is a 1972-built, right-hand Karmann Ghia bodied convertible, which, we are told, is a very good example of arguably the most desirable and certainly the best looking of all 1.6-litre powered open-top VWs. The far more exclusive roadster bodywork is said to be very good as is the Flame Red paintwork and black interior. The air-cooled 4-cylinder engine is reportedly in excellent order and the 4-speed manual gearbox very good. The MOT is current until next May and it qualifies for a free tax disc.
The entrant claims that this classic VW is extremely reliable and would provide good service as an everyday vehicle.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
