Supplied new to America, chassis CT7757L was repatriated in 1979 and subsequently converted to right-hand drive. Self-evidently the subject of past restoration work including the fitment of more comfortable seats complete with head rests, the Triumph has recently been entrusted to Jasmine Porschalink UK – a Lancashire-based specialist in Porsche and classic cars. With its engine and gearbox removed, the TR4 was treated to new mounts for both plus a replacement steering rack, fresh exhaust, new brake pads and choke cables. The underside was tidied up and the engine serviced and compression checked. Further benefiting from electronic ignition, ‘493 XUR’ started readily and pulled well on a recent brief outing for photography. Summed up the seller as ‘a lovely driveable car’, this appealing Triumph is offered for sale with full length tonneau, hood, original seats (in need of retrimming) and valid MOT certificate.
Model Background:
Launched in 1961, the Michelotti styled TR4 was the first TR sports car to incorporate wind-up windows and through-flow ventilation. With independent coil-and-wishbone front suspension, a 'live' rear axle and disc / drum brakes, the model's chassis layout was similar to that of its TR3A predecessor. However, the adoption of rack and pinion steering and a four-inch wider track gave the newcomer notably better handling. Powered by a 2138cc, four-cylinder OHV engine developing some 100bhp and 127lbft of torque, the TR4 was reputedly capable of 104mph and 0-60mph in 10.9 seconds. Such performance was easily accessed thanks to the presence of synchromesh on each of the four speeds in its manual gearbox (another TR first).
