Humber was one of the oldest cycle marques, Thomas Humber making his first bikes in Nottingham in 1870 before opening factories to mass-produce the then new fangled Safety Bicycles in both Coventry and Wolverhampton in 1886. Having built their first 3-wheelers in 1896, Humber became the very first manufacturer of series-production motor cars in England. They also opened an aircraft engine manufacturing division in 1909 and made motorcycles until 1930. The marque was eventually absorbed into the Rootes Group which, in turn, was taken over by Chrysler before being off-loaded to Peugeot.
Post-WW1, revivals of the 1914-launched 10hp and 14hp powered chassis were the mainstay of Humber 4-wheeler production, the latter model enlarged to 15.9hp which equates to 2813cc. Humbers like these earned a reputation for being well built and reliable.
The Derbyshire entrant tells us that his 15.9hp tourer, which was first registered 17 November 1919, has been an absolutely outstanding little motor car, which was owned for most of its 84 years in Scotland where, he says, it did an incredibly small mileage. The 4-cylinder engine, which is a self-starter, is an excellent runner apparently. The Mole Grey paintwork is said to be very smart, the button-back black leather interior largely original and the weather equipment in double-duck recently renewed. The history file contains the original buff logbook, detailing previous owners, there being only two since 1983, the current owner acquiring the car in 1987.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
