Lot 34 - 1985 Harrier LR 4/7 Group C Race Car

1985 Harrier LR 4/7 Group C Race Car

Estimated at £38,000 - £42,000

Lot details
Registration No: N/A
Chassis No: LR4 - 004
Mot Expiry: N/A

Harrier's first Group C car, the Mazda-engined RX 83, ran in the 'Junior' class of the World Championship, taking a class win at the 1983 World Championship round at Spa. The Epsom firm built LR4-004 during the winter of 1984, ready for the 1985 season. For 1985 and 1986, it ran with a turbocharged Ford engine, before being converted to run with a 5.7 litre engine for the 1987 season.
For 1985-1987 Thundersports, Lenik teamed up with drivers Tony Trimmer, John Brindley, Mike Littlewood and Chris Ashmore. He was pictured in the June 10th 1987 'Motoring News' leading the field ahead of eventual winner Mike Wilds, driving a Can Am Lola. Whilst for 1988, for the first three rounds of the new BRDC Sportscar Championship, Lenik shared driving with Del Bennett, before Dave Coyne joined the team and put the Harrier on pole at Oulton Park - almost 3 seconds faster than eventual winners Tim Harvey and Chris Hodgetts in a C2 Tiga. Lenik is pictured leading the race in that week's 'Autosport'.
Later LR7 type bodywork was fitted around 1990 before the car joined a private collection ten years ago. It is offered complete with correct 5.7 litre Chevrolet engine (said to produce over 500 bhp) and Hewland DGB gearbox, which it has run since new.
With the increasingly popular historic Group C GTP series, and after a famous return to Le Mans for the support race to the main 24 hour race in 2004, this Harrier would be an ideal entry to this category. Potentially most competitive in the right hands, it also benefits from having the user-friendly Chevy V8 engine.
