In terms of the number sales achieved, many at the expense of the great rival Ferrari, as well as being practical and reliable to use on the road, one of the most successful of all Maseratis was the 3500GT, 2223 of which were made between 1957 and 1964. In 1957, Maserati very nearly won the World Sportscar Championship with their glorious 4.5-litre quad cam V8 powered 450S sports-racer.
Extremely rare was the 5-litre version of the 3500GT road car, the 5000GT, whose phenomenal 68mph top speed and 0-62mph in 6.5sec acceleration just 34 fortunate owners were able to enjoy. Then, from 1962 to 1966, 444 examples of the Sebring, really a short-wheelbase 3500GT with Michelotti body, were produced. With air-con and auto-shift options, both of which were not offered by Ferrari at the time, many Sebrings found favour Stateside. Whilst yet another derivative of the 3500GT was the 1963-1970 Mistral, which had a shorter, stiffer and lighter Sebring chassis and Frua-styled bodywork with lifting tailgate. A total of 948 Mistrals were made 1963-1970.
The entrant of this 1967-built Mistral coupe tells us that the aluminium bodywork is all original and that the fuel injection, also the original system, has just been overhauled and set-up by leading marque exponent Bill McGrath. Painted silver green with black interior trim, the left-hand drive fixed head sits on handsome Borrani-made wire wheels and has the ultimate spec for this model.
Please Note: This vehicle is MOT'd until April 2004.
