The Lorraine Dietrich is a fascinating French firm, which began making cars as an offshoot of the long established De Dietrich in 1905. The early years were plagued by the car divisions financial troubles, but diversification kept it alive and fine touring cars abounded with the 15CV twice winning the Le Mans. Car production lasted until 1934 after which the firm concentrated on the railway rolling stock.
This particular example is thought to be unique in its form of a Torpedo Spyder although a four seater of the same vintage is in the Schlumpf museum in eastern France. It was purchased by the vendor in 1993 with the intention of participating in the Classics and Claret event and although the car was 'barn fresh' when acquired, that plan was not realised. The car was the subject of an extensive renovation programme which included manufacturing new road springs to pattern and new bead edge type spoke wheels, new brake drums, the steering gear was overhauled, the kingpins were replaced, the radiator repaired, the magneto rebuilt, the engine was rebuilt with new bearings and pistons and a new exhaust system was fitted. It now has an SU carburettor, but still has its original Solex carburettor which is included in the sale, and although the car has not been driven since its last MOT in September 1998 it has been regularly turned over and the oil changed.
This actual car was the property of the Irish National Motor Museum prior to the present ownership and this is an extremely rare car, which would grace any collection.
