Model Background:

Intended as a ‘halo’ model for the resurgent MG brand, the XPower SV Coupe was unveiled at the 2002 Birmingham Motor Show. Based on the Marcello Gandini-penned Qvale Mangusta supercar for which MG had obtained the design rights, the newcomer’s steel chassis was the work of ex-Dallara, Williams F1 and Scuderia Ferrari engineer Enrique Scalabroni. Equipped with all-round double wishbone suspension, four-wheel disc brakes, power-assisted rack and pinion power steering and carbon fibre body panels, the two-seater XPower SV was powered by a 4.6 litre DOHC 32-valve Ford V8 engine allied to five-speed manual transmission. Responsible for facelifting the Lotus Esprit and penning the McLaren F1 hypercar, stylist Peter Stevens ensured that MG’s new flagship did not want for visual drama. A riot of bulging wheelarches, bullet lights and gaping gills, the Coupe looked more than capable of achieving its 165mph top speed. Arriving in 2004, the XPower SV-R proved faster still thanks to its Roush-tuned 5.0 litre DOHC 32-valve ‘Cammer’ V8 engine. Reputedly capable of 0-60mph in 4.9 seconds and 176mph, the ‘R’ could be had with a choice of five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission and cost some £82,950 (a significant increase on its less potent sibling’s £65,000 list price). A convoluted assembly process that saw components toing and froing between Italy and the UK lead to quality control issues and reliability was not a strong point on early examples. Nevertheless, the XPower SV and SV-R duo deserved more than the combined 82 sales that their Owners’ Club estimates they achieved. The contemporary press praised the MG’s performance and handling and prominent owners included the actor Rowan Atkinson.

PLEASE NOTE: Only nine XPower SV-Rs are understood to have been sold before MG Rover collapsed during April 2005. Private customers were able to buy SV-Rs thereafter but these were completed using a pool of spare parts which even included some pre-production prototypes and show cars. Road registered two years after MG Rover entered administration, ‘VX57 JUF’ is one such machine.

The Estimate for this lot is now £32,000 - £36,000
