Lot 32 - 1970 Dodge Charger 500

1970 Dodge Charger 500

Estimated at £26,000 - £28,000

Lot details
Registration No: SKK235H
Chassis No: XP29LOG210061
Mot Expiry: June 2007

Introduced on New Year's Day 1966, the Charger was intended to capitalise on the fastback craze engendered by the Ford Mustang and Plymouth Barracuda. Something of an olive branch between Chrysler boss Lynn Townsend and the Dodge Dealer Network, it was based on the mid-size Coronet platform but borrowed styling cues from an abandoned turbine-engined project. With its distinctive electric-shaver grille, swivelling headlights and plunging roofline, the 'Leader of the Dodge Revolution' had real road presence. Available with a choice of Mopar's finest V8 engines including the mighty 426ci street 'Hemi', the Charger also packed enough grunt to worry more established muscle cars. Thoroughly revamped for 1968, the resultant second-generation or 'Coke Bottle' Chargers (1968 - 1970) are considered by many to be the best looking American performance cars of their generation. Immortalised via appearances in Bullitt ('68 model), The Dukes of Hazzard ('69 model) and The Fast and the Furious ('70 model), they have enjoyed a dramatic price increase over the last few years which shows little sign of slowing. Distinguished by their all-enveloping chrome nosebands and revised full-width taillights, the 1970 Chargers were underpinned by "high-rate rallye-type suspension including sway bar" and could be had in Base, 500 or R/T guises. Sporting wheel lip mouldings, an electric clock and individual bucket seats, the 500 came with a 318ci engine as standard.
Finished in FF4 Light Metallic Green with green vinyl upholstery, this particular left-hand drive example is described by the vendor as being in "excellent" condition with regard to its optional 383ci (6.2litre) engine, three-speed automatic transmission, electrical equipment, interior trim, chassis, bodywork, paintwork and wheels / tyres. Reportedly "an original numbers matching big block car with factory build sheet", it was supplied new to California but "has lived most of its life in Southern Spain". Mechanically upgraded with an Edelbrock hi-rise inlet manifold, 750cfm four-barrel Holley carburettor, header exhaust system and new front power disc brakes / servo, its specification also includes power steering and factory-fitted air-conditioning. Treated to a build-sheet correct bare-metal respray and replacement chrome, it retains its original bucket seats and vinyl roof covering. Believed but not warranted to have covered 95,628 miles from new, it rides on new Torque Thrust-D Racing Alloys shod with fresh BF Goodrich raised white letter tyres. Winner of 'Best in Show' at the Belgian Mopar Nationals on 26th June 2005, this stunning Charger is offered for sale with restoration invoices (reputedly totalling over £17,300), MOT certificate valid until June 1st 2006 and historic class (free) road tax until May 31st 2006.

PLEASE NOTE: The vendor has informed us that there are accompanying invoices for the money spent on this car. This car also comes with MOT certificate and road fund licence until June 2007.
