Lot details Registration No: CK 9999 Chassis No: 7256 Mot Expiry: 30.7.2001
By the mid twenties Alvis had a fine reputation and in 1926 sold over 900 of the splendid 12/50's. T.G. John and his innovative engineer G.T. Smith-Clarke though were always interested in new projects and turned to front wheel drive with an experimental sprint car and some straight eights. The introduction of the 12/75 in 1928 broke new ground with its inboard front brakes, all independant suspension and optional supercharger and they did well in competition notably 6th & 9th at Le Mans and 2nd in the T.T.
This 1928 supercharged example, car no. FE12076, was supplied new to G.C.U. Brown of Lytham in long wheel base saloon form and was raced at Brooklands in June 1929. It was subsequently shortened and fitted with a two seater body and Dickie Stoop raced it after the war against the Frazer Nashes with considerable success.
Since the present owner bought it in 1983 it has been fully restored by Vintage Autos of South Carolina and Wilkinsons of Derby with a T.T. style body made from 'Alvis Factory' plans and dimensions. It has an Allen crank and a new high efficiency radiator core and under 2000 miles have been covered since the work was finished in 1990. It has won concours prizes and it has been reunited with its original registration number and featured in an article in Classic and Sportscar in May 1993, a copy of which is in the huge history file that accompanies this rare and exiting machine.
PLEASE NOTE: We didn't make enough of the front wheel drive aspect of this superb car as there were only about 150 built and something like 50 remain in existence world-wide. An extremely rare pice of Alvis history.
Please also be aware that there is a dismantled windscreen frame with the car.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
