Yamaha entered the 1970's with a successful range of sporting two strokes in the light and middle weight classes and the XS1 series of 650cc twins in the larger capacities. The XS1 was intended to compete directly with the then dominant British twins in the US market and was joined by the technically interesting double over head cam TX500 and 750 twins in 1972/73. Unfortunately for Yamaha, the arrival of the CB750, Z900 and GT750 resulted in poor sales for the largest of the Yamaha twins. Yamaha's response arrived in 1976 in the form of the XS750 triple. The new machine was powered by a compact three cylinder double over head cam engine producing a claimed 68 bhp at 9000rpm, with power being taken to the rear wheel via a wet multi plate clutch, five speed gearbox and shaft drive. The powertrain was housed in a twin loop tubular frame with twin front discs and a rear disc providing the braking. Cast wheels and bodywork finished in either a two tone red or, as with the machine offered, black and silver colour scheme, gave the machine a modern and distinctive appearance. The new model was greeted by enthusiastic reviews in the specialist press and quickly established itself.
