The Daimler-Benz factories were very severely bombed out during WW2, 70 per cent of the main Unterturkheim works being reduced to rubble and 85 per cent of the Sindelfingen body plant destroyed. The first postwar engine was produced in February 1946 and the first vehicles, initially all commercials, from June, with the first Mercedes passenger car delivered in May 1947. The 170 was joined in 1951 by the 220 with new oversquare 2195cc 6-cylinder engine with single overhead camshaft producing 80 bhp. With similar bodywork to the 170S, the 220 had a more modern front end with headlights faired into the front wings and was made 1951-1954 before being rebodied with unitary-construction bodyshell.
Offered here, for restoration - though claimed by the East Midlands vendor to be all complete, is a said to be 1955-made 220 with Ponton saloon bodywork. The right-hand drive car, registered in the UK, was painted grey with brown leather interior. The 2.2-litre six and 4-speed manual gearbox are all present and correct, and the car has done a believed to be genuine 88,746 total mileage.
