Introduced three years after Chevrolet's wonderfully dramatic 1965 Mako Shark II show car, the fifth generation (C3) Corvette shared many of the same styling cues. Under its beautifully moulded fibreglass skin laid a tough boxed section steel chassis boasting all round independent suspension and large disc brakes. Powered by a series of rumbling V8 engines, the C3 went through a number of stylistic changes during its long fourteen-year production run. Priced at $22,538 the 1982 built-to-order-only 'Collector Edition' model was the first 'Vette to break the $20,000 barrier. Finished in a unique silver-beige metallic 'fading shadow' paint scheme with matching 'tri-colour' leather upholstery to its seats and door trims, it rode on special 'turbo fan' alloy wheels. Further distinguished by an opening rear hatchback and bronze 'solar screening' glass roof panels, each one carried a special I.D. plate confirming its authenticity. Powered by the same newly introduced 'Cross-Fire' Injection fed L83 5.7 litre V8 mated to four-speed automatic transmission as the rest of their 1982 brethren, Collector Editions also came with power assisted steering and brakes as standard.
According to information supplied by the vendor this particular example has "belonged to a father and son from new". Believed but not guaranteed to have covered a mere 44,400 miles, it is said to have been "recently serviced including new brake discs, pads and exhaust". Benefiting from "air conditioning, electric windows / locks / mirrors and driver's seat", it is thought to be one of just 6,759 'CE's made. Last of the so-called Big 'Vettes, this striking left-hooker is offered for sale with "a number of service parts, handbook and service manuals".
