1927 Rolls-Royce 20hp Limousine

Sold for £21,375

(including buyers premium)

Lot details
Registration No: YE 578
Chassis No: GYK4
Mot Expiry: July 2006

Launched in 1922 to meet the buying public's demand for a smaller, more manageable Rolls-Royce, the 20HP was nevertheless built to the same exacting standards as the marque's flagship Silver Ghost 40/50HP. A factor that somewhat limited / negated the profitability of the less expensive 'baby' Rolls. In keeping with contemporary advances in car design on both sides of the Atlantic, the 20HP featured unit construction of its engine and gearbox as well as a 'Hotchkiss drive' rear axle. Its 3,127cc straight six powerplant was notably refined despite being the first Rolls-Royce engine to utilise overhead valves. Updated in 1925, the model benefited from the fitment of all round drum brakes and a four-speed, right-hand gear change.
Purchased by the vendor from an H&H Classic Auction in June 2003, this elegant Thrupp & Maberley Limousine has since been extensively refurbished. Finished in maroon over black, its coachwork was taken back to bare metal before painting (a similar process being undergone by its black painted chassis too). While the black leather front seats (thought to be original) were left in situ, those in the back (including the fold-down occasional ones) were re-trimmed in beige West of England cloth. Benefiting from new carpets and headlining throughout, the interior was further smartened by having its woodwork refinished. Externally, the 20hp has had new running boards made, its brightwork re-nickeled and Klaxon horn overhauled. Mechanically, it was found to be in sound order but has nonetheless received new piston rings and a cylinder head rebuild (skimmed, valves re-seated etc). Described by its proud owner as being in "beautiful condition", this regal Rolls-Royce is full of nice touches such as the oval rear window and sliding division. Sitting on five new tyres, it is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until July 2006 and road tax until December 2005.

PLEASE NOTE: We have been informed by John Whetton that this car was built in 1926 before being registered to its first owner Lady Bland Sutton on 30th January 1927.
