Following the brief success of their James Bond movie exposed 2000GT, of which sub-contractor Yahama only made 360, the Toyota Motor Corporation's next foray into the sports car market was the Celica. A mini pony car in the wheeltracks of Ford's Mustang in the US and their Capri in Europe, Toyota's 2-door, 4-seater sports coupe was based on the Carina with 2124cc motor for the States and 1588 or 1968cc engine options for the rest of the world - originally single overhead cam motors, though soon twin cams were fitted. Changes to this, the first generation of Celica included a change from 4 to 5-speed gearbox in 1974 and a liftback version from 1976.
On offer here is the very first ex-works Celica, which was supplied by Ove Andersson's TTE Europe factory team to Oates's Garage, County Durham for them to prep for their driver Fred Henderson to campaign with great success on British events.
This genuinely historic1975-made rally coupe has been freshly fully rebuilt to exacting standards with all the period-correct equipment. The bodywork and white and red livery have all been restored, new rally seats fitted, and both the 1.6-litre twin cam rally motor and 5-speed close-ratio gearbox reconditioned only 500 miles ago. It would be ideal, different and potentially very competitive for special stage rallying in the up to 1600cc class of 1974-1978 Post Historic events.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
