Jaguar's MkVII luxury saloon and XK sports car dominated two sectors of the performance car market during the early 1950s, their 1955-launched MkI quickly shot to the top of the medium-sized sports-saloon chart. With coil sprung wishbone front suspension and semi-elliptic springs at the rear, it was a success in terms of conquests from rival brands on the road and weekend results on the tracks.
Initially powered by a 2.4-litre 6 cylinder XK motor, though soon with 3.4-litre engine option, the Mk I was updated with a roomier and much better handling MkII with thin pillars in 1959. Available with 3.8-litre engine, producing 220bhp and even more powerful, the MkII Jag was to become one of the Coventry firm's most enduring designs.
On offer here is a 1961-built MkII saloon which was totally restored to claimed as new condition in 1993 by specialists Status Cars of Coventry. Air-conditioning and power-assisted rack and pinion steering were fitted during the refurbishment. The London vendor tells us that the car has only been driven 8985 miles since all this work was done, and that the overall condition of bodywork, blue paint and red interior, as well as both 3.8 engine and 4-speed manual gearbox, is said to be excellent.
All thanks to so many supporting roles in TV dramas, most famously providing the trusty wheels for Inspector Morse, the MkII Jag has become an icon among automobiles.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
