The 1980 Bentley version of the R Series replacement, the Mulsanne, owes its name to the famous straight on the Le Mans circuit where the 'Bentley Boys' put the marque on the map. The new bodyshell was longer, wider and lower, and gave owners 30 per cent more glass area. Having had a normally aspirated motor, performance was really boosted by the addition of a Garrett turbocharger on the Mulsanne Turbo from 1982.
According to confirming paperwork, the 1984 Mulsanne Turbo on offer here was a first supplied by Bentley agents Jack Barclay to the Honourable William McAlpine of Sir Robert McAlpine construction company fame. The first owner had ordered his car with knee roll, underdash trim, radio surround and rear parcel shelf, all trimmed in green hide. More discreet plain radials rather than the more usual whitewalls were specified, too, as was a Blue Spot Toronto radio.
This ex-McAlpine Bentley is still finished in Forest Green metallic with radiator grille correctly painted green and marque distinctive 'Flying B' mascot. The interior has Connolly hide trimmed seats in green with beige-piping and burr walnut fascia.
This Mulsanne not only looks good, but is as comfy as a Gentleman's Club on wheels, while the turbocharged 6750cc V8 will provide a lucky new owner with supercar performance for a modest outlay. With some really nice provenance thrown in, this could be your passport to Bentley ownership.
