Lot 24 - 1958 Jaguar XK150 SE 3.8 Litre Drophead Coupe

1958 Jaguar XK150 SE 3.8 Litre Drophead Coupe

Estimated at £40,000 - £44,000

Lot details
Registration No: KSK 318
Chassis No: S837930DN
Mot Expiry: March 2008

The final version of the XK sportscar line and the last Jaguar to carry a separate chassis, the XK150 was introduced in May 1957. While its use of independent torsion-bar front suspension, a 'live' leaf-sprung rear axle and rack and pinion steering mirrored the practice of its XK140 predecessor the new model benefited from all-round Dunlop disc brakes. Stylistically, it was brought up to date with less ostentatious curves and a larger, wrap-around single piece windscreen. The dashboard too was altered eschewing wood trim for padded leather. With the E-type still very much under development, Jaguar were keen to sustain the sporting reputation that their remarkable five Le Mans victories (1951, 1953, 1955, 1956 and 1957) had earned them. To this end, the XK150 could be had in both 3442cc and 3781cc guises and to normal or tuned 'S' specification. With power outputs ranging from 190bhp for the base 3.4 up to 265bhp for the ultimate 3.8S performance was always an XK150 strong point. Equipped with four-speed manual gearboxes as standard, even the 'slowest' versions were said to be good for over 130mph.

Finished in Old English White with brown leather upholstery, this particular right-hand drive example is described by the vendor as being in "good" condition with regard to its engine, four-speed manual plus overdrive gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim, chassis, bodywork, paintwork and wheels / tyres. Beginning life as a left-hand drive 'Special Equipment' Drophead Coupe (or so its chassis number would imply), 'KSK 318' was reportedly treated to a very extensive restoration by marque specialist Country Classics in 1990 that cost "nearly £60,000". Thought to have come from an early Series 1 3.8 litre E-type (or so the 'R' prefix to its serial number would indicate), the car's straight-six DOHC powerplant is fed via triple SU carburettors. Said to have covered just 5,900 miles since work was completed (a figure apparently substantiated by eleven MOT certificates) and to "drive very well", this 'drophead gorgeous' XK150 is offered for sale with history file (restoration invoices etc), MOT certificate valid until January 2008 and historic class (free) road tax until February 2008.

PLEASE NOTE: We believe that this vehicle has been upgraded with a 3.8 litre MK X engine and not an E-Type as previously thought.

PLEASE NOTE: This vehicle has an MOT until March 2008.
