Although the Standard name was employed by no fewer than fourteen vehicle manufacturers, the most famous Standards were built by the Standard Motor Company of Coventry which was founded by Reginald Maudsley in 1903. The move out from the city centre to the outskirts at Canley, the manufacturing home of Standard and later Triumph for the next 47 years, took place in 1916. Standard was the Royal car supplier for the 1911 Delhi Durbar when King George V was crowned Emperor of India.
One of the most successful models was the 1921 SLO with 1797cc exposed pushrod overhead valve motor and wheelbase long enough to accommodate four-seater coachwork. In 1922, the engine capacity was increased to 1944cc and, by the time manufacture had ceased in 1928, some 20,000 had been made.
The owner advises us that this characterful open tourer of 1927 vintage was purchased from the late Doug Connell, Kenilworth-based purveyor of interesting collector vehicles. It is claimed that the car is in excellent condition with body, paint and interior all said to be very good as a result of having been well looked after in its current role as a weddings car. A fresh MOT test pass should be on file before sale day.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
