Morris's Minor is almost as universal a symbol of England as the London bus and the red telephone box and, with over 1.6million being manufactured in its 23 year reign, is one of the most successful cars of all time. Designed by Alex Issigonis (who also penned the ubiquitous Mini), the Minor was unveiled at the 1948 Earls Court Motorshow. It was intended to provide the luxuries and practicality of existing quality motorcars at a price suitable for the ordinary person. There were two variants at launch - a two-door Saloon and Tourer. The four-door Saloon followed in 1950 and the popular Traveller, Van and Pick-up versions completed the range two years later. The first versions, MMs, were produced from 1948 to 1953. The monocoque bodies were equipped with torsion bar suspension at the front and a live axle mounted on leaf springs at the rear. Power came from a 918cc straight-four, sidevalve engine producing 27.5 bhp. With the Series II of 1952, came a new engine - the A-Series 803cc OHV unit. The more major update of 1956 saw the engine increased in capacity to 948cc (the car was now renamed the Minor 1000), the rear window enlarged and the split-screen front one replaced with a single glass.

The lady vendor informs us that the 1957 Minor 1000 being sold is a "well cared for car" and has apparently invested £3,672.60 on its upkeep since 1998 - the invoices for which come with the car. The work carried out includes: an engine overhaul in 2000; new carpets and seats restored/recovered in 2000/2001; attention to the chassis and half shafts in 2005. We understand the venerable Morris has been garaged for at least the last 10 years and that it "runs very well, with a smooth gearchange and transmission". The vendor describes the coachwork, paintwork and transmission as "good" and the interior as "good" apart from the headlining which apparently now needs some attention. With today's students discovering Morris Minors are cheaper to buy, insure, tax (FOC) and run than modern cars, they have a whole new following. This one shouldn't have too much trouble finding a new home.
