The success of the overhead cam Gran Sport in the Italian long distance classics of 1955 and 1956 led to the development and release of two road going machines that became the progenitors of a range of singles for Ducati. The 175cc Sport was displayed for the first time at the 1956 Milan Show and was quickly joined by the touring 175T. The two 175cc machines were joined for 1958 by a pair of smaller siblings displacing 100 and 125cc, with both being offered in touring and sports trim.
Ducati singles, in all their forms, have proved to be amenable to tuning with a number of specialists offering parts and services resulting in them becoming a favourite with the classic racing fraternity. The example offered left the factory in 1965 as a narrow case 175cc but has subsequently been modified for racing. It is fitted with a full fairing, racing fuel tank and saddle, clip-ons and rear sets. The engine benefited from the attentions of well known Ducati specialist Witty Ducati in 2001, who upgraded it to 220cc, although the CRMC Registration certificate provided with the motorcycle declares its capacity as 198cc. Work carried out in addition to the increase in capacity included the conversion of the head to twin plugs to aid combustion and Lucas Rita ignition system being fitted. A new 30mm Dell Orto carburettor was fitted on an alloy inlet manifold. The head benefited from new valve guides with larger valves and porting to match and an Omega piston was installed following the rebore.
The motorcycle is offered in very good condition throughout with copies of the original quote and subsequent invoice from Witty Ducati detailing all of the work carried out on the motorcycle in addition to the CRMC registration certificate previously mentioned.
