Lot details Registration No: XRA 707 Chassis No: RME22367 Mot Expiry: Jan 2008
Introduced in 1946, the Riley RMA was one of the first British cars launched after WW2 to feature a new chassis design. With independent torsion-bar front suspension, rack and pinion steering and strong 80mph performance from its gutsy 'twin-cam' 1496cc, four-cylinder engine the RMA was deservedly praised by the contemporary motoring press for its excellent ride and handling qualities. Its successor, the RME, arrived in 1951 featuring a host of mechanical revisions. An open propshaft now linked the four-speed manual gearbox to a new hypoid bevel rear axle, while stopping power improved courtesy of Girling hydraulic brakes and the enlarged rear window gave welcome extra visibility.
Finished in Old English White with brown leather upholstery, this particular example is variously described by the vendor as being in "good" (engine, gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim, wheels / tyres), "very good" (bodywork) or "excellent" (chassis, paintwork) condition. Riding on steel wheels, 'XRA 707' was reputedly given a "chassis up restoration in 2000" by Michael O'Sullivan Auto Repairs of Romsey (Hants). In addition to a brake system overhaul, engine refurbishment (including shell bearings) and chassis cleaning / undersealing, the Riley is understood to have benefited from a partial bare metal respray, replacement headlining and new everflex roof covering. While more recent work has apparently seen it fitted with flashing indicators and a fresh starter motor. Thought to pleasingly retain its original upholstery, this charming RME is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until January 9th 2008 and historic class (free) road tax valid until September 30th 2008.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
