Lot details

Chassis No: VF32CKFXE40654053
Mot Expiry: Nov 2009

"I cannot understate the achievement, to cross the Sahara and travel 6000 miles in a standard road car, enduring conditions only seen on the likes of the Safari Rally is a major accomplishment for Barbara, Alyson and of course the Peugeot 206 but this was matched by the ingenuity of Peter Banham in reviving the engine against all the odds" (Mick Linford, Peugeot Motorsport Manager).

One of seventy cars to contest the 2001 London-Sahara-London World Cup Rally, this Peugeot 206 was crewed by former British Ladies Rally Champion Barbara Armstrong and her co-driver Alyson Marlow. Specially prepared for the event by Historic Motorsport Ltd on behalf of Peugeot Sport UK, 'V776 OAC' tackled all eighty-two time controls and twenty-eight competitive test sections with aplomb. Indeed, it looked like a potential winner until suffering con-rod failure close to the Brooklands finish. Amazingly, World Rally Championship mechanic Peter Banham then devised an ingenious GRP repair to the punctured cylinder block which lasted long enough for Armstrong and Marlow to claim second place overall (albeit on three cylinders).

Still proudly wearing its Peugeot decals and World Cup Rally plaques, 'V776 OAC' has been on display at the David Sutton Motorsport Rally Car Museum for the last seven years or so. Fitted with a correct type but replacement 1360cc four-cylinder engine, it has been otherwise untouched since finishing the twenty-day London-Sahara-London marathon. Showing a mere 9,400 miles to its odometer (just 100 of which have been covered on the new powerplant), the Peugeot is variously described by the vendor as being in "good" (electrical equipment, interior trim), "excellent" (five-speed manual gearbox, bodywork, paintwork) or "as new" (engine) condition. Seemingly ready for further competitive usage but boasting a better provenance than most 'clubman' cars, this well-travelled 206 is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until November 2009.
