Successor to the 'Twin-Cam', the Ford Escort RS1600 was homologated for Group 2 rally use in September 1970 (after a thousand road-going examples had been built). From then until the introduction of its MKII based RS1800 replacement in 1975, it racked up an incredible number of victories across a dizzying variety of terrains. Not content with winning the 1972 East African Safari, RS1600s also placed first on the British RAC (three years running 1972-1974), the Finnish 1,000 Lakes (five times), the Arctic Rally in Finland, the Scottish International and the 'Heatway' New Zealand event.
According to information supplied by the vendor, this Ford Escort is an ex-Works 1972 World Championship RS1600 Team Car. Road registered as 'REV 119K', its individual race history reputedly comprises such notable results as:
1972 Monte Carlo Rally (Piot / Porter) 5th Overall (1st Touring Car)
1972 East African Safari Rally (Hillyar / Birley) 4th Overall
1972 Scottish International Rally (Mikkola / Cardno) 1st Overall
Said to have been restored about twelve years ago, more recent work has seen the Escort converted from right- to left-hand drive configuration (as per the Works cars in period), re-painted in 'Daily Mirror' / Scottish Rally colours and treated to a rebuild of its later type Cosworth-Ford BDA 1800cc engine by Ray Millington (just 50 miles ago). Reportedly a regular participant in "the British Historic Rally Championship with many top five placings, including 1st overall on the 2000 Premier stages", we understand its current specification to be as follows:
