Tatra first started making cars in Czechoslovakia in 1923 and were really a continuation of the Nesselsdorf Company. The Type 11, produced by Hans Ledwinka, was realistically a classic in the history of automobile design. In 1934 they were again destined to make automobile history with the Type 77 which had an all enveloping body and was built strictly to aerodynamic principles. In 1937 the 87 was launched and was capable of one hundred miles per hour, mainly due to weight reduction.
This particular example was built in 1939 but remained unsold due to the war. It was imported into Ireland for the Romanian Legation in 1946 and came to England in June 1950 and re-registered in 1954. It was purchased by a Mr Mike Hawley in 1968 who took ten years over the rebuild, after which it was acquired by the present owner in 1988 who has continued to upgrade the car. We are informed that it is in superb running condition with lots of very good spares for the engine and a new set of brake drums, which are available from the owner after the sale.
This extremely rare and desirable Tatra is still in it's original left hand drive configuration and we are sure that this milestone in Eastern block car manufacturing will create a lot of interest at the sale.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
