1933 Rover 10hp Special Saloon

Sold for £4,500

(including buyers premium)

Lot details
Registration No: US 2352
Chassis No: 311924
Mot Expiry: Oct 2007

One of three Lightweight Rover models available for the 1933 season, the 10 Special boasted somewhat more sophisticated running gear than its 10/35 and Family 10 siblings. Based around a sturdy, ladder-frame chassis equipped with all-round semi-elliptic leaf-sprung suspension, Lockheed four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes and a spiral bevel final drive, it was powered by an 1185cc OHV four-cylinder engine allied to four-speed manual transmission. Rubber-mounted, the drivetrain was also notable for its inclusion of a freewheel device (that sat just aft of the gearbox) and Lucas Startix system. While, the former device was aimed at improving economy, the latter was designed to automatically restart a stalled engine. Fitted with Pressed Steel saloon bodywork, the 10 Special was among the last models to be assembled at Rover's Tyseley plant. Reputedly capable of 56mph and 32mpg, it was superseded by the 10hp 'P1' during 1934.

Finished in maroon over black with maroon leather / leathercloth upholstery, this particular example is variously described by the vendor as being in "OK" (electrical equipment, paintwork), "good" (engine, four-speed gearbox, interior trim, wheels / tyres) or "excellent" (chassis, bodywork) condition. According to the accompanying logbooks, 'US 2352' was purchased by the second of its four keepers in 1935. A travelling salesman by profession, he was granted a petrol ration during World War Two. Reportedly taken off the road in 1957 before "eventually passing to a relative who extensively restored the car in the late 1980s / early 1990s", the Rover is understood to have been "stored and on museum display since". Believed but not warranted to have covered some 93,852 miles from new, 'US 2352' is said to "need recommissioning" despite possessing a MOT certificate valid until October 12th 2007. A rare survivor, this charming 10 Special Saloon is offered for sale with "all original logbooks and a 1957 tax disc".

PLEASE NOTE: We have not has this vehicle running.

PLEASE NOTE: The vendor has informed us that this vehicle suffers from a sticky AC fuel pump valve, but it did drive to and from its MOT. It is also said to have benefited from new front tyres and some attention to its brakes.
