Tractor manufacturer and Ferrari enthusiast Ferruccio Lamborghini set-up his rival marque, Automobili Ferruccio Lamborghini, to handcraft his own exotic Grand Tourers at Sant'Agata Bolognese. He recruited Giotto Bizzarrini to come up with a V12 engine, Gianpaulo Dallara a chassis to take it and Franco Scaglione to pen headline-grabbing bodywork. Their first Lambo, the 360GTV, took to the Northern Italian roads in 1963. Ferruccio's chosen logo, a fighting bull, was clearly aimed to go head to head with Ferrari's famous prancing horse!
Finished in light green metallic with brown leather interior, the 1972-manufactured Espada being auctioned - a full 4-seater, Bertone-styled GT - had an indicated 38,934 miles when entered for this sale and this is believed to be the genuine total mileage since new.
The stylish Lambo has been in the Lancashire owner's hands for the last fourteen years and, during that time, has been the subject of a full and professionally executed respray, and a full rebuild for the 4-litre 12-cylinder engine. There are photos on file recording all the work carried out.
The suspension has been completely rebuilt, says the vendor, and the car is currently shod with alloys, believed to be Italian, though the original wheels are included. The interior is said to be very good with a period-correct Blaupunkt push-button radio and rear seat belts fitted. Lots old MOTs are included in the file and the overall condition is claimed to be good.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
