1950 MG TD

Sold for £18,450

(including buyers premium)

Lot details
Registration No: KSM 567
Chassis No: TD/0509
Mot Expiry: June 2011

The first of the post-war MGs was the TC. It bore great similarity to the pre-war TB and was fitted with basically the same 1250cc OHV XPAG engine that was common to the Morris 10 of the period. The major difference between the TB and TC was the interior - the latter benefiting from a wider cockpit.

The TC was superseded by the TD in 1950. Though visually quite similar to the earlier cars, it was built around a more modern chassis derived for the Y-Type saloon. The benefits included coil spring suspension at the front, rack and pinion steering, smaller 15in disc type road wheels and the option of LHD. The newcomer also boasted a hypoid bevel rear axle, hidden scuttle reinforcement hoop and twin leading shoe front brakes, and was five inches wider than its predecessor. Bumpers and over-riders joined the list of standard equipment for the first time. Some 30,000 TDs had been produced by the time the model gave way to the TF in 1953, all but around 1,600 or so of which were exported - some 23,500 going to the USA alone.

'KSM 567' was first registered on March 1st 1950. Originally black in colour it is now finished in Old English White and sports a cream leather interior. A right-hand drive model, its buff log book shows seven owners in the Weymouth/Bournemouth area. The vendor acquired the car in 1994. Photos from this era apparently confirm a degree of refurbishment that is thought to have included a new wooden body frame.

This very smart MG comes complete with a handbook and is equipped with a luggage rack. The vendor says it has "very good" coachwork and paintwork and "good" engine, transmission and interior trim. It is reportedly MOT'd and taxed until summer 2011.

PLEASE NOTE: Since the catalogue went to press, the vendor has provided the following further history:

1987 - Bought by Adrian Thomas

1990 - "Chassis-up" Restoration by Tamer Valley MG Centre, instruments restored by Heritage Restoration

1991 - Entered Norwich Union Classic Rally
Concourse Winner

1993 - Entered Haynes Motor Museum Classic & Sports Tour
Best Overall Car

1994 - Sold to current owner
Since then kept in garage with full cover
Engine "overhauled" in 2006
Driven under 500 miles

PLEASE NOTE: This vehicle has a current MOT expiring June 2011
