Lot 10

1979 Daimler DS 420 Landaulette

Estimated at £6,000 - £7,000

Lot details
Registration No: KGB477T
Chassis No: DWATL3AXL10050
Mot Expiry: Nov 2007

Introduced in September 1968, the Daimler DS420 was the marque's last true coachbuilt limousine. Styled by Sir William Lyons, its sleek four-door bodywork sat on a modified Jaguar 420G floorpan complete with all-round independent suspension, four-wheel disc brakes and power steering. Powered by a 4235cc DOHC straight-six engine allied to automatic transmission, the model belied its imposing bulk with a top speed of over 110mph. Although, final assembly of the DS420 was initially entrusted to Vanden Plas, the London coachbuilder's demise in 1979 saw production transferred in-house to Browns Lane. A firm favourite in the Royal Mews (the late Queen Mother had five consecutively), the Daimler also found favour with heads of state and celebrities worldwide such was the capacious luxury offered by its rear compartment. Still a staple part of many diplomatic fleets, the DS420 was phased out in November 1992 after some 5,044 had been made (including 903 'drive away' chassis).

Finished in gold over cream with fawn upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "good" condition with regard to its engine, automatic transmission, electrical equipment, interior trim, chassis, bodywork, paintwork and wheels / tyres. The subject of a professional landaulette conversion which we are informed would now cost "in excess of £3,500", 'KGB 477T' has apparently proven to be "a very successful wedding car earning £325 a time". Indeed, we understand that this potential money spinner is only being offered for sale so that the current owner can downsize his fleet in favour of more vintage cars.

PLEASE NOTE: The pump is leaking on the power steering on this vehicle.
