The 1964-launched 911 really put the Porsche marque on the world map - and though constantly modified and uprated, this icon model was to remain in production for more than thirty years. The first 911s were powered by a flat 6-cylinder, air-cooled motor of 1991cc capacity and had the 5-speed transmission from the 904. Most were fixed heads, though a targa-top was also offered.
The 1966 right-hand drive 911 offered here, with appropriate `911' registration, was acquired by the present owner in 1989. A total rebuild to authentic works 911R spec by Northern Ireland specialists 911 Services took six years to complete in 2001 at a cost of around £40,000.
The body was stripped to a bare shell and rebuilt for maximum strength. An ultimate spec 2-litre engine produces a tractable 207bhp at the rear wheels, whilst close ratio gearing results in a top speed of 116mph at c6500rpm. The FIA-compliant rally spec includes Bilsteins, the latest cage,a Halda trip, and rare and correct for model rally lighting. The history file should contain a detailed build file. Since completion, this rally-ready 911 has been carefully run-in and has not yet been used in competition.
For several seasons now, pre-1967 Championship special stage events - both in the UK and on the closed roads of Ireland - have been dominated by the 911.. Buying this one here is likely to cost you a fraction of doing your own.
