Two Germans, Siegfried Beltman and Maurice Schultze, founded Triumph in Coventry, where they produced their first motorcycle in 1902. When Jack Sangster acquired the bike part of Triumph, the Ariel owner put Edward Turner in charge of Triumph bike production in Coventry. It was Turner who designed the overhead valve, parallel twin of 498cc capacity, which powered the 1937 Twin which was to really form the basis of so many Triumph milestone machines well into the 1980s.
Post WW2 production resumed at Meriden, just outside the bombed out motor city, where a long list of classic twins, like the Tiger, Thunderbird, Daytona and Bonneville, were produced, all directly related to Turner's first Triumph Speed Twin.
On offer here is 1959-manufactured classic 500cc Speed Twin with red painted frame which the entrant tells us has been well looked after and has been used regularly on runs to the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales. Even with two people on board, the ride is described as being smooth and pleasant. Enjoy!
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
