Lot details
Registration No: BFA101L
Chassis No: XA2W2-710217A
Mot Expiry: None

Introduced in October 1969, the Mini Clubman was penned by ex-Ford product planner and stylist Roy Haynes. Intended as a replacement for the Mini-derived Wolseley Hornet and Riley Elf, the newcomer boasted better frontal crash protection and improved under bonnet access. While, inside Paul Hughes - another Blue Oval refugee - contributed a smart two-dial instrument binnacle and three-spoke steering wheel. Available until 1982, the Clubman Estate (like its Countryman forebear) blended the Mini's legendary handling and verve with a welcome dose of practicality. Sitting on a longer 7-ft 0-in wheelbase, it featured all-round independent suspension, four-wheel drum brakes and rack and pinion steering. Powered by a 998cc (1098cc from 1975) four-cylinder A-series engine allied to four-speed manual transmission, the estate was only fractionally slower / less economical than its saloon sibling. Similarly available with the option of automatic transmission (though only in 998cc guise), the load-lugger wore wood-effect fillets down either flank until 1976 when the entire Clubman range was facelifted. Enjoying a loyal following - there is an active Clubman Estate Register - the model has also acted as inspiration for the latest BMW 'Mini'.

Finished in Teal Blue with buff upholstery, this particular example is variously described by the vendor as being in "good" (chassis), "good for year" (bodywork, paintwork), "very good" (engine, four-speed manual gearbox, electrical equipment, wheels / tyres) or "excellent" (interior trim) condition. While she goes on to say: "I bought my Mini in 1977 off a lady who treasured it as much as me with a mileage of 4,888. Since acquiring it my Mini has never been out in the rain". Kept garaged and occasionally started since its last MOT certificate expired in December 2006, 'BFA 101L' has covered just over 33,000 miles from new. Believed to be to original specification throughout (aside for an aftermarket 'unleaded fuel converter' housed in its petrol tank), this low mileage Clubman Estate is worthy of a good home.
