The long-awaited new Mercedes SL (R129 Series) was launched at the Geneva Motor Show of 1989 and was based on a shortened version of the W124 floorpan. It was a beautifully-engineered car that bristled with technical refinement and innovative safety features. The specification included independent suspension all round (double wishbone at the front/contemporary five-link system at the rear), adaptive damping, ventilated disc brakes with ABS, electronic stability control, a hidden roll-over bar that automatically extended when required, and front air bags. The specification was extensive and included electrically powered windows, mirrors, seats and convertible top.

The SL280 offered here was delivered new in August 1996 by Mercedes-Benz main dealer Caffyns, Wessex. Finished in Silver with a Cream leather interior, this car was delivered with a matching factory hardtop. The second owner, a Mrs Francis Hull from New Milton, acquired the Mercedes in June 1997 and kept it until it was sold with 99,000 miles on the odometer to the current lady vendor in December 2003. Since then, the car has been used as a daily driver and kept regularly serviced by specialist A.G. Bentley, with the last stamped service in 2017. In 2016 the car was damaged and classed as a ‘Category D’ insurance loss, but the vendor chose to have it repaired. MOT records show that the SL280 passed its last MOT in November 2020 with 188,171 recorded miles. Said by the vendor to drive well, ‘P423 VCG’ is in need of some sympathetic recommissioning and it is therefore offered without reserve.
