Introduced in 1984, the Peugeot 205 1.6 GTI has long enjoyed a reputation as one of the best 'hot hatches' ever made. Based around a lightweight three-door monocoque bodyshell, the newcomer was equipped with all-round independent suspension (McPherson strut front / trailing arm rear), disc / drum brakes and rack and pinion steering. Initially credited with developing 104bhp and 97lbft of torque, its predominantly alloy SOHC 1580cc engine was notably revvy and eager. Receiving a new cylinder head for the 1987 model year which boosted outputs to 113bhp and 99lbft of torque, the four-cylinder unit was allied to five-speed manual transmission. Despite impressive performance figures (0-60mph in 8.6 seconds and 121mph), it was the model's handling that won over the contemporary motoring press. Weighing in at just 880kg, the 205 1.6 GTI possessed a nimbleness and delicacy of feel sadly lacking from its modern equivalents and indeed is considered by many to offer a purer driving experience than its heavier albeit faster 1.9 sibling.
First registered and sold from TAD Peugeot in Finchley on 1st April 1990, this 205 GTi was a rarer Special Edition example. With 6 former keepers recorded in its c.108,000 miles, this 5-speed manual 1.6 GTi was fitted from new with power steering and sun-roof. Possessing the arguably more attractive 14” ‘pepperpot’ alloys, the car has recently undergone an extensive restoration over the past four years. During this, the owner completely refreshed the engine including new H.T leads, distributor cap & rotor arm, oil sump, gasket & temperature sensor, clutch cable and fork kit, timing belt, water pump, coolant flange, hoses, clips & thermostat, a new starter motor, alternator, driveshafts, air intake and rear exhaust box. The gearbox was also subject to a thorough refresh with further work of a similar standard being carried out to the bodywork, underside, steering and suspension. Since the restoration, the owner took his beloved 205 on a road trip from his house in Essex all the way down to St. Ives and reports that the car behaved faultlessly throughout the 1,000 mile journey. Finished in Miami Blue over a black leather interior, G16 PUG is offered for sale with an MOT until February 2026, along with the orignal owner's bookpack with service book as part of a comprehensive history file including several receipts from the restoration, previous MOT certificates and tax discs and current Swansea V5c.
