The roots of the luxuriously equipped and potent Mk. IX Jaguar lay in the Mk. VII that had been launched at the 1950 London Motor Show. The Mk. VIII of 1956 brought added opulence to the interior and a few detail changes to the outward appearance (most noticeably the move to a curved single-piece windscreen), while the Mk. IX delivered a 3.8-litre, 220bhp version of Jaguar's all-conquering DOHC XK engine, servo-assisted disc brakes all-round and recirculating ball steering. The Motor magazine's test of an automatic example returned a 0-60mph time of 11.3 seconds and top speed of 114.4mph—no mean figures for a 16ft.-plus saloon weighing 4,000lbs.
This most graceful of saloons is offered in need of some light recommissioning, having resided for some thirty years in a private collection of more than sixty cars. The late previous owner purchased it in 1993 and immediately decommissioned it for static display. Although not in use, it was not ignored, and benefited from paintwork restoration during 2017 and 2018. After the owner’s death in 2020, it was sold from his estate in December, 2024, to our vendor, who commenced the recommissioning process, although it remains to be completed.
In January, 2025, the Jaguar was taken to Classic Restorations (Scotland) Ltd. with its water pump seized. Work was undertaken to free it and generally improve the condition of the engine so that it could be made to start, and in February the carburettors were stripped and overhauled with new jets, needles, needle valves, shaft seals and air bypass seals, the total work costing £2,476. Bidders should note that further recommissioning may be required with respect to the brakes, transmission, etc. Looking highly attractive after the attention to its paintwork, and with a really fine, lightly patinated original interior, it promises to be a straightforward and very worthwhile project. It is sold with a V5C and invoices from Classic Restorations (Scotland).
