Lot details

Registration No: PNT 954G
Chassis No: AR1695249
MOT: Exempt

  • One of only 2,680 1300 Spider Juniors produced
  • Subject to a full mechanical and cosmetic overhaul in 2022
  • Original and rare right-hand drive market car from South Africa imported in 2022

The Alfa Romeo Spider first broke cover at the 1961 Turin Salon, though production did not commence until 1966. The pretty two-seater, then known as the 'Duetto', is said to have been the last project with which 'Pinin' Farina was personally associated. Just one year later the model was immortalised by the Dustin Hoffman film 'The Graduate'. The chassis was based on that of the Giulia 105 and initial examples were powered by a 1570cc version of Alfa's sonorous four-cylinder twin-cam unit. In 1967, the Duetto was replaced by the 1750 (1779cc) Spider Veloce. A new lower priced 1300 Junior model, fitted with a 1290cc unit, was released in June 1968 alongside the GT 1300 Junior Coupé which produced 88hp giving 106mph at top speed. From a mechanical standpoint the Junior differed from the 1750 only in engine displacement and output, while inside it lacked some features of the pricier model: namely opening quarter lights, centre console, and the three-spoke wood rimmed steering wheel which was replaced by a two-spoke plastic rimmed one. From outside the Junior version could be recognised by its black-coloured lower front bumper and absence of plastic headlamp fairings.

According to the Alfa Romeo Owner's Club, chassis AR 1695249 was manufactured on the 8th February 1969 and sold on 20th June 1969 to Johannesburg, South Africa and was originally painted in Alfa Red with a Black Skai interior. The car is believed to have been owned since at least the 1970s by a single family and was sold to an Alfa Romeo Specialist in Johannesburg in around 2019. The car was then subject to a complete overhaul both cosmetically and mechanically being finished in Off-White over a refurbished Red leather interior. The car was then imported to the UK after being sold to our vendor who has owned multiple classic Alfa Romeos who registered the car in the UK in early 2023 and enjoyed the car throughout the summer.

Our inspection revealed a car that presents in excellent order as to be expected of a recent overhaul. The paintwork looks very fresh with the body being in very straight, original order having lived a dry life in South Africa. The interior has been refurbished with the seats having been recovered in Red Leather with new Black carpets, but the dashboard remains largely original with the original Veglia instruments remaining intact and fully operational. The underneath of the car is painted in body colour and also presents in fine order. The vendor has advised that mechanically the car is in very fine health thanks to a full engine overhaul (and might we say visually is very well detailed), suspension rebuild and brake overhaul including a new servo and much more.

Overall this car presents as a fine opportunity for any prospective purchaser to own a rare and iconic Italian sports car in a very rare specification that is ready to enjoy.
