Although Rover's attempts to acquire Morgan in 1966 had proved fruitless, it nevertheless granted the sportscar manufacturer access to its newly acquired, ex-Buick lightweight aluminium V8 with a view to cementing a supply contract. Hired by the Malvern works to assess the powerplant's merits, race engineer Maurice Owen lost little time in shoehorning one into a Morgan Plus 4 chassis. With trials of the resultant prototype successfully undertaken in 1967, the Plus 8 debuted at the following year's Earls Court Motor Show. Built along familiar Morgan lines, its ladder frame chassis was equipped with independent 'sliding pillar' front suspension, a leaf-sprung rear axle and disc / drum brakes. Supported by an ash frame, its swooping bodywork looked as traditional as ever but gave no clues as to the new model's performance potential. Initially equipped with a four-speed Moss gearbox but later Rover four- and five-speed units, Autocar magazine found even the earliest Plus 8 capable of 0-60mph in 6.7 seconds and 124mph.

Delivered new to its first and only previous owner, a Mr Thomas E. Banbury of Oakham on the 13th of February 1984, finished in special order Rosso Corsa (Red) over Black, a colour combination the Plus 8 still wears with pride today. It was ordered with a Rover V8 engine mated to a 5-speed gearbox with the optional rack & pinion steering and folding & reclining seats. It was also specified with ‘wings off’ factory paintwork, Cuprinol treated ash frames and underseal. As an added luxury, a radio/cassette player with scuttle-mounted aerial was fitted as well. Mr Banbury enjoyed ‘A799 KFK’ for 31/2 years before it was acquired through Heart of England Morgans (Sales) Ltd of Halesowen by Mrs Toddy Collyer but registered in her husband’s name. Mrs Collyer used the Morgan as her daily driver from the time of acquisition until her passing in 2022, covering well in excess of 100,000 miles during her custodianship. As such, the car has always been well-looked after, which is supported by the impressive collection of invoices detailing works and servicing carried out each and every year by Morgan specialists from 1987 up to the present day, with Techniques of Stotfold, Hertfordshire being entrusted with looking after the car for the last twenty years. Offered in nice and useable condition with a large history folder containing the original sales specification, Mrs Collyer’s purchase invoice, every single MOT since new, all invoices since 1987, an original owner’s handbook and a current V5, this Plus 8 is ready for the next 100,000 miles in the hands of its next enthusiast owner.
