  • USA-delivered 560SL
  • Converted to Euro-style bumpers in the UK
  • Much recent expenditure

The third generation SL (R107) was launched in 1971, initially with just a 3.5-litre engine (350SL) mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. The car featured a two-door monocoque bodyshell with independent suspension and disc brakes all-round. Over its phenomenal 18-year reign, the R107 range was powered by eight different engines - two sizes of straight-six and six versions of Mercedes-Benz's silky smooth V8. The V8-powered 560SL was manufactured from 1986 to 1989 and only offered in the US, Japanese and Australian markets. With 227bhp on tap it was a genuine 130mph car, with ample reserves of effortless acceleration.

The 560SL offered here was delivered new to the United States in 1986. It was ordered in a striking Arctic White with a contrasting Royal Blue leather interior. The soft top is finished in a matching Dark Blue fabric and the car is offered with a factory hard top finished in Arctic White, mounted on its own stand for storage. Imported into the UK in October 2019 by the current vendor, the Mercedes first underwent a cosmetic upgrade to Euro-specification bumpers front and rear and was converted to meet MOT standards before being UK registered in February 2021. According to the vendor, the newly fitted Euro-style bumpers are made up of old chrome - not stainless steel - and brand new steel cores. An original steel rear lower valance was sourced and colour matched to the car. The original US twin headlight units were retained to give the car a sportier look, but all four light units were changed to RHD ones.

Still looking resplendent in its Arctic White paintwork with twin Dark Blue coachlines, the vendor describes the exterior as being in very good condition all-round. The same can be said for the Blue leather interior and carpets, which are believed to be largely original. The convertible top has been renewed in the past but is in excellent condition inside and out as is the hard top. The Mercedes sits on the correct 15’’ alloy wheels and comes with a matching spare and original jack in the boot. In the current vendor’s ownership, the 560SL has benefitted from a new distributor cap and rotor arm, new calipers, discs, pads and flexible hoses all-round, four new shock absorbers, and new cables, shoes and fittings for the foot operated parking brake. Furthermore, the Mercedes was also treated to new top control arms on the front, new ball joints on the lower control arms, new steering drag links and new torsion bar drop links. Additionally, the power steering pump was professionally rebuilt and the car was fully serviced with new plugs and filters. Currently showing 186,000 miles, the car is presented with a folder containing import documentation, numerous invoices for parts fitted, a current V5 and two sets of keys.
