  • Late example of an A35 Van that retains its original engine number
  • The subject of much previous attention both mechanically and cosmetically
  • Fitted with Countryman style rear seats
  • Described as an 'excellent runner'

Introduced in 1956, the Austin A35 could be had as a two or four-door Saloon, two-door Countryman Estate or Van. The latter became a familiar sight the length and breadth of the UK serving trade and delivery drivers alike. Powered by three different A-Series OHV four-cylinder engines during its twelve-year production life, the diminutive commercial was surprisingly fun to drive (with F1 champion James Hunt famously one of its biggest fans) thanks to the provision of independent front suspension, a well-located hypoid rear axle and hydraulic drum brakes. With so many worked into the ground, survivors are comparatively few and far between.

According to the BMIHT certificate on file, chassis AV8/69933 was built on the 9th August 1967 and despatched to supplying dealer, G. R Hartwell Ltd of Oxford, on the following day. Little is known of this van’s early history; however, it came into the vendor’s possession in 2016 to display alongside his collection of somewhat larger historic commercial vehicles having been particularly nostalgic about his time spent with his father’s example during his childhood.

Already evident that it had been subject to a large amount of cosmetic and mechanical work in the past, the little ‘peanut’ has been lovingly cared for, and several invoices and service notes remain on file for its continued maintenance, including the fitment of a stainless steel exhaust, a cylinder head overhaul, a new clutch and a refurbished radiator. Stated by the vendor to be mechanically in ‘excellent’ fettle, during our visit it started readily with only a quick pull on the starter cable and a short drive to the photography session by the consigning specialist was deemed to be very pleasant indeed. The vendor also states that the bodywork is ‘good’. Prospective purchasers may wish to improve on its paint work, however its patination adds to its charm of being a period working vehicle. It should also be noted that the vendor's own graphics are said to be easily removable.

Now offered for sale due to the downsizing of the vendor’s collection, ‘OJB 339F’ is offered with its history file including the aforementioned invoices and service notes, a collection of owners handbooks and has been MOT’d prior to sale.
